If you're looking for water-soluble oil sticks...
I want to experiment with oil paint sticks. I paint a lot with watercolor and gouache, a little with water-soluble oil paint, and I draw with water-soluble crayons and oil pastels, so I wanted to try oil sticks as they seemed like an intriguing combination of oil paints and oil pastels. The thing is, I'm not a fan of solvents, so I wanted water-soluble oil sticks, and ultimately I found 2 brands, and I ordered 1 oil stick from each brand.
They were suprisingly different. I ordered a PHOENIX Water Soluble Oil Paint Stick in Primary Magenta, the other brand in Prussian Blue. The PHOENIX Magenta is absolutely gorgeous, a stunning color. To use it impasto, it's easier to cut small pieces off and mash it with a palette knife as it doesn't go on as thickly, but it can be done from the stick.
I found using these was very different than using oil pastels or crayons as they're much thicker, and if you cut part of the stick at an angle to get a finer line, it disappears pretty quickly. The magenta made beautiful washes, backgrounds, and splotches of color - like petals for a semi-abstract flower. It's very satisfying to use. It dries like water-soluble oil paint, so expect anything thicker than a wash to take from several days to a week to dry, more if you're using it thickly.
