When I saw these listed, I could not WAIT to get them. I am an artist, and love to work with a wide variety of media. This looked like an interesting art tool so I thought I would try it.
HOW THESE COME
These come well packed in a tin which has cushioning and individual places to keep the colors so they don't bang around when the box is moved around. There is a parchment paper layer on top to keep them from hitting the lid too.
TEXTURE
These are the size of large preschool crayons. The paint sticks themselves are wrapped with a label making them easier to handle. That is good because they are pretty sticky and soft.
KNIFE
The palette knife that comes with this is small but very flexible and easy to work with. I like it a LOT.
HOW TO WORK WITH THESE
I have posted a photo of me just quickly messing around with these. I did not try to do a really serious painting yet as I want to experiment and get to know them first. I took the palette knife and scraped off what I needed. I then put the paint stick scraping on the canvas board and then I smoothed it out.
I tried smoothing it with a finger, a tortillon, a smooth wood head, the palette knife, and a brush. They move around but they ball up really easily and are hard to spread often. This is challenging and will take some time to learn to use them best.
MIXING
Mixing with these is interesting. When I place layers on the canvas of various colors, I can smear it and then do sgraffito in the surface. It will separate out into…
