I Am Not Sure How I Feel About These Yet- Offer Interesting Possibilities

When I saw these listed, I could not WAIT to get them. I am an artist, and love to work with a wide variety of media. This looked like an interesting art tool so I thought I would try it.

    HOW THESE COME

These come well packed in a tin which has cushioning and individual places to keep the colors so they don't bang around when the box is moved around. There is a parchment paper layer on top to keep them from hitting the lid too.

    TEXTURE

These are the size of large preschool crayons. The paint sticks themselves are wrapped with a label making them easier to handle. That is good because they are pretty sticky and soft.

    KNIFE

The palette knife that comes with this is small but very flexible and easy to work with. I like it a LOT.

    HOW TO WORK WITH THESE

I have posted a photo of me just quickly messing around with these. I did not try to do a really serious painting yet as I want to experiment and get to know them first. I took the palette knife and scraped off what I needed. I then put the paint stick scraping on the canvas board and then I smoothed it out.

I tried smoothing it with a finger, a tortillon, a smooth wood head, the palette knife, and a brush. They move around but they ball up really easily and are hard to spread often. This is challenging and will take some time to learn to use them best.

    MIXING

Mixing with these is interesting. When I place layers on the canvas of various colors, I can smear it and then do sgraffito in the surface. It will separate out into…

    Very pigmented, fun to use

These solid paints come in sticks, which you can use dry, and layer, or mix with water and/or oil mediums.

I found they blend better with an oil medium in my testing.

The colors are vibrant and bold. It is easy to create your own thickness, as is your preference, and blend colors together.

It comes with a paint mixing tool, which can be used to cut off the amount you want to further mix, as well as using the tool for the actual mixing and blending of colors.

I found these to be a buildable medium, too.

As an amateur painter, I enjoy trying different mediums. This allows for easy storage without having to worry about your paint drying out.

I was most impressed with the high amount of pigment, resulting in beautiful color!

Great addition to my art supply stash

The PHOENIX Professional Oil Paint Stick set is a great addition to my art supplies! The water-soluble feature makes blending so easy, and the colors are vibrant and versatile. The portable metal tin is perfect for creating on the go, and they’ve quickly become a favorite in my art supplies. Highly recommend for artists of all levels!

Great for travel studio, though there's a learning curve

I ordered these to experiment with them--while I'm fairly experienced with watercolor, water-soluble pencils, inexpensive oil pastels and oil paints, these are somewhere more like a water-soluble crayon that happens to be made from oil paints. One of the reasons I don't regularly work with oil paints is that they need solvent and brush cleaner on a regular basis, which doesn't play all that well in the hotel rooms we're often set up in for my partner's traveling construction work, especially when I factor in his asthma reacting to some chemicals. These are more of a best of both worlds approach, not requiring a bunch of brush cleaner and using water as the solvent for an option that's both no-fumes and readily available anywhere.

I've really been getting back into mixed-media art lately, and these are pretty amazing when used for mark-making over a dried watercolor or acrylic layer, or for glazing or blending a very soft-focus background on items that I'll have time to allow to dry. They do take a week to be dried out enough to seal the piece, or be ready to accept another layer atop them in oil or acrylic, so I have to confirm we're not planning on relocating to a new job site soon before I break these out to play. Tissue or parchment paper can help to keep the finished pieces from sticking, but the biggest factor for these is time.

The sticks are big, the size of a larger oil or watercolor paint tube in volume, making these last a while if I'm using them for accents…

These fat oil sticks are hard to find in stores.

Because I just received it I can't rate it, but it came quickly and my teacher says it is just what I need for my next abstract painting.

I will return this one because my wonderful daughter ordered me the SET OF SIX!
